They are more sensitive to everyday use, and more delicate. Tubes wear out over time, as the flying electrons that make the magic gradually destroy the electrodes inside the tube. Also, air can leak into the tube destroying the vacuum and with it the tube's performance. This gradual deterioration of all vacuum tubes requires period maintanence to test the tubes, adjust their bias current and replace them when necessary. We have several different types of tube testers, a large stock of common and rare tubes, and many years of experience working with new and vintage tube electronics. We will take good care of your tubes. Many vintage components sporting a set of tubes will also have aging electrolytic capacitors and dirty variable capacitors and potentiometers. Electrolytic capacitors deteriorate with age and require replacement after about 15 years, regardless of the amount of use the component has seen in that time. Solid State Electronics - The transistor changed the world back in the 1960s when they came into their own as a major part of almost every electronic circuit in our lives. They are very sturdy little devices, but they too have their weaknesses, and can fail with abuse, or mismatching with speakers. Supporting components in solid state gear are just as vulnerable to age as those in tube gear. We are experienced in diagnosing and fixing all manner of troubles found in solid state amplifiers, pre-amps and audio sources. From the largest PA amplifier to the most sophisticated moving coil phono preamp, we are your 1st choice in audio repair. Turntables - Phonograph, Record Player, or Turntable, however you say it, they are a lot of fun. They sound different than digital sources like CDs, and they require more care and maintenance. The word 'analog' in our name, "The Anaog Store" refers to tubes and turntables. We love turntables for the hands-on tweaking they encourage and the superior audio quality they provide over any other source besides master tape! Over the years we have learned how to tune them to give optimum performance. We can do all necessary repairs, upgrades, cartridge replacement, alignment, motor and power supply repair, installation and fine tuning the turntable system in your home. Of course we also can repair or modify your phono pre-amp, and even spend time with you at your home teaching you how to fine tune your cartridge and preamp to acheive the sound you are seeking. Electrostatic Speakers - The beautiful and accurate sound of these technical marvels is matched only by the delicate nature of their design. While the modern Quad ESL series are built to modern standards and are very robust, this cannot be said of the earlier models. When it was suggested to make changes to the structure of the panels so they wouldn't fall apart upon moderate handling, the suggestion was met by the designer Peter Walker with indignation. Durability was simply not in his design philosophy. So we have become experts at repairing retsoring and overhauling the Quad ESL series electrostatic speakers. Even the newest models will require minor and sometimes even major surgery, and we stand ready to do this for you! With our experience using electrostatic speakers, we can advise you about using them in your audio system, too. Dynamic Speakers - While the latest large panel Quads have come a long way in producing low frequencies and large dynamic swings, a good piston will get you all the dynamics you can stand at a much lower price. And some of the best designs sound almost as clear and transparent as the Quads, almost. At subwoofer frequencies, only dynamic speakers can deliver the SPL you crave. We service all kinds of speakers, and can upgrade older drivers with the latest drivers from the finest European and American manufacturers. Spendor, BG, Quad are our specialty because we are factory authorized service center for these brands. But we welcome repairs on all speaker brands. Reel Tape Decks - This is our specialty. We will repair and restore the original performance of your vintage reel tape deck to brand new, or likely even better than new with modern replacement parts when necessary. Head cleaning, demagnetization, alignment, internal electrical and mechanical repairs are the norm. A master tape is the ultimate audio source, and we recognize that. That's why we maintain repair tools and facilities for keeping these incredible machines going for many years. We have restored reel players that were beyond anything you could imagine, with the original natural rubber drive belts melted all over the insides and dust and dirt filling the interior spaces. In the Triangle we are very fortunate to have several superb radio stations. Some of the best music sources ever made are FM Tuners by the likes of Sansui, Kenwood, Marantz, McIntosh, and others. Component FM Tuners from the heyday of FM are vintage equipment which need the same TLC accorded to vintage tube amplifiers. Variable tuning capacitors will be cleaned, electrolytic capacitors replaced, FM section aligned with very specialized and rare tools.
